<description>&lt;PRE>Have a look at this thread on PerlMonks: it details how you can use MinGW
and its free C-compiler to compile Perl/XS-modules:
http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=539532

I have tried it and it works like a charm! Some modules of course still
refuse to compile, but that probably has more to do with the quality of the
module than with Perl, CPAN or MinGW.

I've cc'ed Philippe Chiasson, who maintains the PPM repository, he can
answer re: POE in particular.

The general model is that we update modules on PPM if they build and
pass their test suites. There are apparently quite a few problems w/ the
POE test suite as indicated on
http://ppm.activestate.com/BuildStatus/5.8-linux/linux-5.8/POE-0.3501.txt
for Linux for example.	I'll let Philippe expand.

Yup, that's the best thing about PPM...

We're planning to release 4.0 this year ( calendrical 2006 ); be on the
look out for Alpha and Beta builds throughout the summer / fall time
frame. To be clear: current development builds of Komodo 4.-0 already
have the url mapping feature, so this is not just decided on, it's
implemented.

Is there a general (not promised) goal to have it in by? Is it a 4.0
thing to come over the next year or two? 3.5.4? 3.6?

We run the CPAN build process every week, and try to build everything.
Lots of packages fail for various reasons:

  - problems with the module ( they have to build clean in an automated
environment and pass their own tests )

  - problems with our build environment ( we try to address these as
best we can )

  - external library or test environment dependencies

A really bad web interface to module build status is available here:

http://ppm.activestate.com/BuildStatus/5.8-A.html

Obviously we would like to improve this, and the build process generally.

The other resource you should be aware of is Randy Kobes' CPAN Search /
PPM repository:

http://cpan.uwinnipeg.ca/htdocs/faqs/cpan-search.html

If you search for a module on here, it wil ( amongst other things ) show
whetehr there is a Windows package available via ppm in a number of
repositories including ours, his, and some others. As an example, POE
0.35 seems to be available form Randy's repository:

http://cpan.uwinnipeg.ca/module/POE

Another angle on this is that, as of ActivePerl 5.8.8 we now support
building modules via CPAN using non-MS compilers such a MingW*

This post has gotten so long, I might as well blog it.

There will be a URI mapping capability that allows you to map a base uri
to a base local path. Setting up mappings will allow you to work around
this particular problem (and others).

Shane

<description>&lt;PRE>I didn't make it
clear that the reason I'm not more excited about your
improvement over using xdebug_break() is because your still have
multiple versions of the same file floating around in the IDE.	And,
that's where thing really get messed up, you start editing one of these
files that have been downloaded by the webserver, and have to erase it,
click through a couple of confirmation dialogs, remake the changes in
the right files, etc., etc..

But, I think you hit on that point in your original reply.

you were doing that. Just didn't know you were proposing
it as a superior method to using xdebug_break.	I could see how your
method could save a little bit in the compile-edit-debug cycle, but
maybe I'm just debugging quite a bit of a larger code base because the
stepping line by line through the code thing just isn't realistic in my
scenario. And yes, I did see your mention of the alternative of setting
the breakpoint after the IDE breaks on the first line of PHP code rather
than stepping through.

Thanks for the reply,
