[Announce] ANN: ActivePython 2.4.3.12 is now available (bugfix for	Windows)

<PRE>I'm happy to announce that ActivePython 2.4.3.12 builds for Windows are
now available for free download from:
    http://www.ActiveState.com/Products/ActivePython/

This is a bug fix release to for one Windows issue:
- Fix a bug that results in ".pyo" and ".pyc" being placed on the
PATHEXT environment variable before ".py" for clean installs. Bug
33311. This can cause surprises for command-line usage for Python
scripts when not specifying the ".py" extension. The new installer
will fix PATHEXT on machines that hit this bug. See this thread for
  more details:
      http://tinyurl.com/poyhp

If you use ActivePython on any other platform, 2.4.3.11 is still the
latest build.

What is ActivePython?

<PRE>ActiveState Acquired by Employees and Pender Financial Group
Company renews focus on tools and solutions for dynamic languages

Vancouver, BC Â? Feb. 22, 2006 Â? ActiveState, the leading provider of tools
and services for dynamic languages, announced yesterday that it has been
acquired by ActiveState Software Inc., a new company jointly owned by the
employees of ActiveState and Pender Financial Group Corporation, an
investment company focused on technology and healthcare. All of
ActiveState's business, assets, and liabilities were acquired from Sophos,
Inc., a subsidiary of Sophos Plc., for the purchase price of US$2,250,000.

As an independent entity, ActiveState will continue to develop and support
its award-winning programming tools, language distributions, and enterprise
support services for dynamic languages, with major releases of all tools
scheduled to ship later this year.

ActiveState will be led by Bart Copeland as President and CEO, and Dr. David
Ascher as CTO and VP, Engineering.

Copeland brings 20 years of leadership, management, finance, and business
experience to his role. Most recently, he was Interim CEO of iMessaging
Systems, Inc., a New Hampshire-based interactive voice response software
company, President & CEO of Recombo, Inc., a content integration technology
company, and President and CEO of PhotoChannel Networks Inc., an online
image and printing/picture messaging services for retailers and wireless
carriers.

"I'm excited to be joining ActiveState at this stage in the company's
evolution," said Copeland. "They are an established leader who have achieved
many successes to date, and are well-positioned to be a major force in the
industry. I look forward to leading the company to further success."

As CTO and VP, Engineering, Ascher will focus on product and technology
strategies. He has spent the past six years providing business and technical
leadership for ActiveState, most recently in the position of Chief
Technologist, and has over 17 years of experience as a developer,
consultant, and advocate of open source software.

"This investment allows ActiveState to once again be independent," said
Ascher. "This is great news for us, and, more importantly, for our
customers, who will benefit not only from our renewed focus on current
product lines, but also from the wealth of expertise and resources that Bart
and our new investors will contribute toward future growth."

In addition, Kelly Edmison, President and CEO of Pender Financial Group,
will become Chairman of ActiveState's Board, and David Roberts, President of
PenderFund Capital Management Ltd., will join Edmison and Copeland as a
Director.

<PRE>I'm happy to announce that ActivePython 2.4.2.10 is now available

This release is a maintenance/update release for existing platforms and adds
support for three new ones: Mac OS X/x86, Windows/x64 and Linux/x86_64. See
below for a full list of supported platforms.

Changes in this release include:
- Add early support for Mac OS X for Intel platform (macosx-x86).
Please see the "Mac OS X for Intel" section below for details.
- Upgrade to PyWin32 build 207 on Windows/x86
- Upgrade Tkinter to Tcl/Tk 8.4.12
- Support for Windows/x64 (win64-x64). Note that PyWin32 has not been ported
to 64-bit Windows so this build does not include PyWin32.
- Support for Linux/x86_64 (linux-x86_64)
- Fixed a problem on Mac OS X/PowerPC that unintentionally created a
dependency on Fink (fink.sourceforge.net) for the "bz2" and "curses"
  extensions. (Thanks, Bob!)
- The Windows "debug libraries" package now allows installation into
non-ActivePython Python installations of the same version. This was
requested by Dave Abrahams for the Boost folks (http://tinyurl.com/898zw).
- Changed Intel 32-bit architecture platform name from "ix86" to "x86",
changing package names for some ActivePython builds.

Mac OS X for Intel
------------------

This is the first release of ActivePython for Mac OS X/Intel. It should be
considered an early release. This build is not a universal build and there
are a number of known issues:
    http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/docs/ActivePython/2.4/relnotes.html#KI_macosx

I suspect that ultimately a universal Python build is the right answer, but
details and issues around that should be discussed on the Python Mac mailing
list:

[Announce] ActiveState ends development of dynamic language	plug-ins for Microsoft Visual Studio

<PRE>ActiveState has announced the end of engineering support for Visual Perl,
Visual Python, and Visual XSLT, effective immediately.

The plug-ins will not be updated for Visual Studio 2005, and there will be
no further maintenance on the Visual Studio 2003- and 2002-compatible
versions. Due to the necessary inclusion of Visual Studio integration code
in Visual Perl, Visual Python, and Visual XSLT, the plug-ins can not be
open-sourced.

Our decision to discontinue these products was driven by the
disproportionately large development effort required to keep them in sync
with Visual Studio. Despite an avid user base, customer demand did not reach
levels required to fund ongoing development.

We are committed to working with our customers to miminize any inconvenience
that may result from this decision. To that end, ActiveState will:

a) at customer's request, replace each commercial plug-in license with a
license for Komodo Professional Edition, and each educational plug-in
license with a license for Komodo Personal Edition;

b) provide unlimited licenses for the current 2003/2002 plug-ins;

c) continue to host the installable software for Visual Studio 2003 and
2002, via FTP;

d) offer installation and configuration support through June 15, 2006; and

e) continue to host the visualperl-discuss, visualpython-discuss, and
visual-xslt-discuss mailing lists on ASPN.

Existing customers are encouraged to contact Sales@... for
further details.

Changes and Bug Fixes
----------------------

* Windows version includes PerlEx for IIS.

* HTML help and TOC are always updated when a module is installed,
by PPM, by CPAN shell, or even when installed manually.

* On Windows and Mac OS X sample code in the HTML docs has syntax
  highlighting.

* On Windows ActivePerl will automatically use MinGW to compile modules
if Microsoft VC++ is not installed, but MinGW and dmake are.

* Security vulnerability CAN-2005-0448 has been addressed by replacing
  the rmtree() function in File::Path.

* The following modules have been updated:

    Archive-Tar-1.26
    Archive-Zip-1.16
    Compress-Zlib-1.41
    HTML-Parser-3.46
    IO-String-1.07
    libwin32-0.26
    Mac-Apps-Launch-1.92
    Mac-OSA-Simple-1.09
    Time-HiRes-1.76
    Unicode-String-1.09

There are several fixes and new features for Windows in the updated
  libwin32 module.

For a complete list of changes, see:

Cheers,
-Jan

PS: Build 814 was identical to build 813 except for the addition of
    a beta version of PerlEx.
